Being situated on the strip of land between the Black Sea and Caspian Sea, known as the Caucasus, Georgia has been continuously inhabited since the stone age. Because of its transcontinental location the country was invaded and occupied over the centuries by various forces, such as the Persians, the Romans, the Arabs and the Mongols. This country is quite impressive with its archaeological ruins some dating to the 5'th century BC, great fortresses and churches. Georgia is rapidly becoming a highly populated tourist location.
Currently, Georgia is a member of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the World Trade Organization, the Organization of Black Sea Economic Cooperation, the Community of Democratic Choice and GUAM (Organization for Democracy and Economic Development). Georgia is aspiring to join NATO and the European Union.
