Estonia is a democratic parliamentary republic and its located east of the Baltic Sea. The main port, Tallinn, now the capital, was part of the Hanseatic League in the thirteenth century. Its medieval prosperity offered the romantic city plenty of modern attractions for tourists eager to explore. The modern name of Estonia was given by the Roman historian Tacitus. Estonia was a member of the League of Nations starting 22 September 1921, joined the United Nations on 17 September 1991, the European Union on 1 May 2004 and NATO on 29 March 2004. Also, Estonia has signed the Kyoto Protocol.
