Bosnia and Herzegovina is not a homogeneous country from an ethnic level. Before the civil war most people here were Serbs, a fifth were Bosnians and one third were Croatians. Even before the fall of Yugoslavia the different ethnic groups had a difficult relationship , but they tolerated ich other. Bosnian Muslims aspired to independence, and the Serbs of Bosnia and Herzegovina wanted the union with Serbia, thus triggered the civil war. Back then, two million refugees have left the country, and now, according to the estimates of the High Commissioner for Refugees of the United Nations half of them have returned home.
