The Greek capital is Athens, situated in Attica at the foot of the Acropolis hill (156 m) and 5 km from the sea. The population of Athens is 3,096,775 inhabitans.
The first remains of a human settlement on the Acropolis dates back to 3-2 millennium BC. Polis hegemon of Athica (8-7 century BC), Athens becomes the most brilliant center for economics, political, but especially cultural for the entire Greek world in the 5th century BC, after the rejection of Persian invasion and after the founding of the League delio-verges.
Despite defeats in the Peloponnesian War (404 BC) and the Macedonian conquest (388 BC), Athens remains the spiritual metropolis of Greece, position also kept under Romanian domination. During the Byzantine rule and especially under Turk rule, Athens reached the level of a humble rural settlement with 2000-3000 inhabitans. The capital of Greece becomes independent 09/18/1834.
