Geography of Bosnia-Herzegovina

Bosnia and Herzegovina is made up mostly of the highlands of the former Yugoslavia. In the north the country borders with Croatia, the Sava River separating the two regions. In the south, dense forests and hills divide Bosnia and Herzegovina from Montenegro.

The country's name comes from the great regions that divide the country into two parts. Bosnia to the north, is the largest of them, and it's name comes from the Bosna River that flows into the Sava. In the south is the second region, Herzegovina, which is the gateway to the Adriatic.

In the north there is the Republika Srpska, an political autonomous republic that formed after the cessation of the civil war. It is inhabited mostly by Serbs and it's controlled from the city of Banja Luka, while Bosnia and Herzegovina has the capital in Sarajevo.
